The Jakarta Komodos Rugby Football Club’s combined Under 14 to Under 162 boys division havs gone from strength-to-strength as more junior players have progressed through the earlier age groups, the recent arrival of new expatriate players and the club’s commitment to developing grass-roots Indonesian players from marginalized community groups.
In total, the Jakarta Komodos RFC have almost 30 new and returning rugby players, offering the exciting prospect of fresh raw talent and older, more experienced heads. Training these two age groups together is expected to assist with the development of the younger, less proficient players, with the older age-group members being able to take on mentoring-type roles.
The Komodos’ experienced coaches, including Komodos Junior Rugby Club Head Coach Ahmed Fawzi, will focus on establishing fitness, mental conditioning and basic skills within these age groups, which will translate into enjoyment and results against both local and international opposition on rugby fields within Indonesia and abroad.
All Komodos’ players, including from the lower age groups, are expected to represent the Komodos with honour and to promote both the club and the game of rugby as widely as possible for the development of the sport that so many people around the world adore.
We welcome players of all skill levels and backgrounds, and have proven time and time again to be one of the last significant stepping stones to representing the Komodos’ Senior Team.
Promoting girls’ community and rugby in Indonesia
With the growth of women’s rugby in Rugby all over the world, the Jakarta Komodos have seen an increase in the participants in the last few years. Some of our stars start in the club from our U8 age group and move through the ranks until they reach the “girls’ only” division for the Under 14 and Under 16. However; sometimes, the first taste of rugby for these girls is when they turn 12 years or older and they get introduced to the game.
We offer the girls an opportunity to learn the game, meet new friends, improve their skills, enhance their self-belief, improve their confidence and generally have fun and enjoy themselves. Our girls will compete in a number of tournaments during the year, with some overseas in Singapore and Hong Kong.
This group is open to all, whatever the skill level and with the introduction of girls from Keranggan SMP, SMP Purnabhakti, other local Indonesians and other nationalities, we find a group dedicated to wanting to improve, not only as rugby players, but as individuals.

In the Jakarta Komodos Under 10s/Under 9s mixed boys and girls age group, players are provided with a safety-focused environment in which to develop their skills in full-contact rugby.
The Under 10s/9s junior players build on the foundations of full contact rugby learnt during the U8s and develop this to round them further as players. The focus will be on embedding the key basic skills of tackling, passing and rucking through standard set drills and moving these into match scenarios. The stress is placed on teaching consistency, confidence, skill, safety and teamwork.
Players will be introduced to other key facets of the game for the first time like scrumming and line outs; they will be instructed on the 10 positions of mini-rugby, the roles of each of the positions and where to place themselves on the field. Players will have the opportunity to trial the various positions to find out where they perform best and where they can further develop their rugby life.
Working in set pieces and understanding the various positions will promote supportive play and team work between the players as they start to rely on each another, players will learn the fundamentals of momentum rugby, where moving forward is what individual players and the team as a whole should strive to achieve.
As with the Under 8s and 7s, the Komodos are aiming to play as many competitive matches this season as possible. This will not only include tournaments in Jakarta and Bali, as well as abroad in Singapore and Thailand, but it is hoped that we will be involved in more regular internal matches.
By the time of the Centaurs International Mini Youth Rugby Tournament in Singapore in December, the Under 9s and 10s will have been drilled on:
In 2017/2018, in the lead-up to tours in Bangkok and Singapore, we will continue to drill the above basic skills, while focusing on individual skill development and advanced forward and backline play. The season will end in May 2017 with a Juniors and Seniors 10s tournament at Jagorawi, the 2017 Crown Jakarta Komodos 10s Tournament.
Starting this season, the Jakarta Komodos Under 9s and 10s will train on Saturdays and Tuesdays. Training will be at our training grounds at the Jagorawi Golf and Country Club from 9am to 10:30am on Saturdays and at the Jakarta Intercultural School (JIS) on Field 1 from 5:30pm to 7pm on Tuesdays.
Saturday sessions will focus on teamwork, positioning and some skills training with at least 20 minutes of mini-rugby, where we play to age-appropriate rules aimed at enjoyment and player safety.
We will follow a participative coaching regime, where volunteer parents will train our young players together with the head-coach. We actively encourage parent involvement and participation. Do not worry if you have no rugby playing or training experience, we are happy to help.
We also ask that parents encourage their children to maintain their fitness levels during week days, with an emphasis on sprint training whenever possible. By mid-season a child should be able to run 5 sets of 30m sprints at 30 second resting intervals while maintaining the same time at full speed.
Kids should also at least once during the week do three sets of five basic core exercises that will be taught at practice, and three sets of push-ups. There is no need to send your boys and girls to body-building class. We will also teach fun passing and tackling drills that your son or daughter can do with you in the living room.
Pound for pound, the combined Under 8s/Under 7s mixed (both boys and girls) team pack the biggest punch in the Jakarta Komodos Rugby Football Club, with raw ability and boundless energy more than making up for the lower skill sets and fuller understanding of the intricacies of the great game of rugby.
This is the perfect group for children ranging in age from 6 to 8 to be introduced to the sport, and the strict no-tackle policy allows for a primary focus on fitness, running with the ball, handling skills and the invaluable introduction to being part of a team, the club and the wider rugby community.
Saturday training sessions typically comprise an hour of drills and a 30-minute game among the players where they can put what they have learned into action in what are entertaining matches enjoyed by both players and parents. The season is marked by a number of competitive matches at tournaments in Jakarta, a provincial tour to Bali as well as overseas tours to Singapore and Thailand. Though these matches are generally considered to be Under 7s, 8-year-olds can be granted dispensation to play on the team, with consideration given to experience, size and ability.
There is only one rule – having a good time.

We have a Tots section for those under 6 years old which is friendly and encourages play as well as learning basic skills with a rugby ball such as catching and passing. A great start to the weekend for parents who want to get their kids active in the morning!
