Aphrodite Group Gets Into Junior Rugby Development in Indonesia

Fez restaurant and bar, part of Jakarta’s respected Aphrodite Group, have been confirmed as the latest sponsor of the Jakarta Komodos Junior Rugby Club, joining a select group of companies that actively contribute to the development and growth of the sport in Indonesia.

Fez by Aphrodite as a Gold+ sponsor joins Gold sponsors Beca Indonesia, a multinational engineering and related consultancy services company, and Sports Turf Solutions, a Southeast Asia wide company dedicated to the golf industry. French-headquartered food company Danone, known in Indonesia for its Mizone and iconic Aqua brands, is the Jakarta Komodos Junior’s title sponsor.

Frederick “Fred” Alloysius and the other shareholders in the Aphrodite Group have long been supporters of rugby in Indonesia and are one of the principle sponsors of Indonesia’s national team, the “Rhinos.” Aphrodite and the Britmindo Group of Companies, which provide a range of services to the mining industry in Indonesia, can take credit for much of the improvement of the national side in recent years.

Fred said the improved competitiveness of the national side had been a key motivation in his decision to increase his investment in the development of junior rugby with his financial support of the Jakarta Komodos Youth Programme.

“It ticks a lot of boxes for us. Rugby is a great game played by a bunch of dedicated individuals, and fostered by this amazing sense of community within the wider rugby community,” Fred said. “We wanted to be a larger part of that.”

He said the Komodos corporate social responsibility programs were also key factors. “The Komodos are out there every week spreading rugby by involving a team of young women from the Mama Sayang orphanage and have about 40 kids from Karangan village near the Jagorawi training grounds who play each week. It’s great to see.”

¬¬In addition, the Komodos have a number of Silver sponsors that support the club, namely:

  • Jones Lang LaSalle Incorporated (JLL), a professional services and investment management company specializing in real estate
  • Kontrol Indo Raya, an engineering consultancy based in Indonesia
  • Security company G4S
  • The New Zealand International School
  • DHL, which specialises in international express deliveries, global freight forwarding, warehousing, mail deliveries worldwide and other customized logistics services

Jess Djamhoer, the coordinator of the Komodos’ Junior Rugby Programme, confirmed that the club was still seeking additional sponsorship. “We need one more Silver sponsorship [Rp8 million] and additional sponsorship for the 40 Karangan boys and 40 Mama Sayang girls,” she said. “Any other sponsors are welcome and we will place their logo on advertising, future kit, t-shirts we are planning on making for sale and kit bags.”

Jess said she also wanted to thank Now Jakarta, Indoexpat and What’s New Jakarta for publishing articles about the club, PT Elders Indonesia President Director Richard Slaney who donates meat and helms the Komodos’ BBQ, and Crown Relocation Services, one of the principal sponsors of the Komodos Jakarta 10s Rugby Tournament.

The Jakarta Komodos Youth Rugby Club has a number of teams, from the Under 18s down to Under 7s, as well as the Mama Sayang team. The Under 7s/8s and Under 10s are looking particularly strong this season, though the club welcomes any new players into what is a family focused, social club environment.
